Misogi and Goal Setting: The Power of One Big Annual Challenge
Oct 05, 2025
In Japanese tradition, Misogi (禊) is the practice of purification through challenge. Historically, it meant rituals in nature — cold water immersion, fasting, or other demanding practices — designed to clear away what no longer serves you.
Today, it has become a powerful idea for athletes and explorers alike: setting an annual challenge so big, so bold, that success isn’t guaranteed.
Why Misogi Matters in Training
Most of us set goals that feel safe. We pick distances we’ve done before, targets that look achievable on paper, or races that fit neatly into our calendars. Those goals are important — they build momentum, keep us consistent, and track progress.
But a Misogi goal is different.
It’s the “stretch goal” that asks: What if I can do more than I think I can? It’s meant to scare you a little. The point isn’t necessarily to tick it off with a neat finish time, but to embrace the process, the discomfort, and the growth that comes with daring to try.
Misogi with Safety in Mind
It’s important to remember that Misogi isn’t about putting yourself in dangerous situations, or sticking stubbornly to an adventure or race plan when it’s no longer safe. Sometimes the bravest move is knowing when to pivot — pulling back when injury threatens, changing course when conditions are dangerous, or stepping aside when pushing further would cause harm. The real growth comes from showing up and exploring your limits, not from reckless risk.
That’s where having a coach can help — someone to guide the goal, the build-up, balance the training load, and remind you that stepping back can be just as strong as pushing on. Coaching brings structure to the chaos and helps you approach big goals with both courage and care.
How Misogi Complements Traditional Goal Setting
As a coach, I encourage athletes to set a balance of:
- Everyday goals: consistent training, steady mileage, improved recovery habits.
- Performance goals: a race time, building toward a distance, or sharpening fitness.
- Misogi goals: a once-a-year, almost too-big-to-imagine challenge that stretches your limits.
When you pair structure with audacity, you create space for real transformation.
Finding Your Misogi
Your Misogi doesn’t have to be an ultra-marathon or an extreme expedition. It could be:
- Running a distance that intimidates you.
- Entering a race outside your comfort zone (terrain, altitude, climate, distance).
- Tackling a self-set challenge — a solo long run, a vertical challenge, or a multi-day adventure, or even a run streak.
And for newer runners or adventurers, backyard-style challenges such as the Blue Lake 24 hour event can be a fantastic option. A loop format, gives you regular access to crew, aid, and support. This safety net allows you to go deep into the challenge without stepping into unnecessary danger — a great way to experience the essence of Misogi while keeping risk low.
The key is that it feels uncertain. If there’s a 50/50 chance of finishing, you’re in Misogi territory.
Why I Believe in the power Misogi
Because Misogi strips things back. It reminds us why we run: not for perfection, but for growth. It resets perspective and gives everyday training new meaning. And whether you finish or not, you walk away changed.
So as you plan your year, I encourage you to ask yourself: Could there be a Misogi goal ?
