"There’s nothing I love more than seeing someone grow—not just in running, but as a human being. To play even a small part in that is truly epic."
With experience in Outdoor Leadership, Personal Development, Business, and now many years of Run Coaching grounded in Sports Science, I bring a diverse set of skills to help runners thrive. Supporting people on their journey brings me a huge sense of joy and fulfillment.
Running has been woven through my life since the 80s, when I was a kid tearing around barefoot. I grew up in athletics and cross-country, and as a teenager I spent years running alongside my dad on the milk trucks—building “ultra legs” without even realising it. Later in life, I overcame significant personal challenges, including drug and alcohol addiction. Clean and sober since September 2007, I carry with me deep experience in mental resilience and spiritual principles, which I now share with athletes to help them break through their own barriers.
My coaching journey began between 2016–2018, when I started helping a few people in my circle for fun. At that time, I was facing huge changes in my personal life: my mum passed away after years of illness, I went through my own burnout story, and my marriage came to an end. Those experiences reshaped my values and priorities. By late 2018, I was living in a house-bus, and in 2019 I met Char. Since then, Char and I have been on an incredible journey together—not only building CMF Running, but also committing to purposeful living and continued personal growth. We love waking up each day to do this work.
Being a full-time run coach, with my livelihood tied to the success of CMF and the athletes I serve, I’m deeply committed to ongoing learning and development. I don’t hand out cookie-cutter plans or try to fit people into a rigid system. Instead, I look at each athlete as an individual: What’s the best way I can serve this person? Everyone comes with their own strengths, weaknesses, limitations, and ingrained beliefs. Within that uniqueness lies so much potential—for them and for me. Often, it’s my athletes who end up teaching me, providing breakthrough moments I never expected. This is very much a shared journey.
I don’t believe in locking myself into a single coaching philosophy. I lean on Sports Science for prescription and analysis, but I also bring in health, intuition, and personal development. Data isn’t everything—but it is something. Holistic measures aren’t everything—but they are something too.
I also love creating community through CMF group runs and events, fostering a sense of belonging and shared achievement. Over the years, I’ve coached runners of all levels—from walk/jog beginners to 2:40 marathoners and ultra-marathon podium finishers. The common thread in all success stories is the same: trusting the process, maintaining open dialogue, and being willing to try new things.
